4th of July Patriot Walk
On the Fourth this year, while many
Americans were just waking up, The Breed’s Hill
Institute was suiting up. Near our base in Southern
California eight volunteers, armed with two thousand
copies of a replica Colonial newspaper and dressed in
Colonial garb, took to the streets.
All along the Independence Day
parade route these intrepid Colonials engaged the
crowds. The Colonial newspaper they handed to excited
patriots announced the Declaration of Independence with
a complete printing of the document.

It also included period articles and amusing
advertisements to give people a flavor of the times. The
response was overwhelming. People were delighted with
the authentic-feeling newspapers, and many were reading
the Declaration aloud to their families. If someone did
not readily reach out when offered a paper, our
Colonials would ask if they had Tory (British)
sympathies. Throughout the parade our volunteers whipped
up cheers of Huzzah whenever they shouted,
“Independence is declared” and "God save General
Washington."
Many times along the way we were greeted by
people who remembered us from last year’s parade and
thanked us for what we were doing. Some told us of
school projects they had created--as both teachers and
students--while others told us they had framed the
Declaration of Independence we had given them the year
before. Most importantly, we were able, if only for the
moment, to capture their minds and imaginations and
remind them of the source of our American Liberty. All
of this was made possible because of donations from
people like you.
Parade organizers have asked, “What will you do
next year to top yourselves? With a wink we say, “Wait
and see.”
